Chip Kelly signs contract extensionChip Kelly has been rewarded for turning the Ducks into the top program in the Pac-10 by signing a six-year contract extension to stay with Oregon through the 2015 season.

Oregon released the total value of the contract as .5 million, an average of .4 million a season. The new agreement went into effect on June 15, 2010.

Kelly has won 14 of his first 17 games as the Ducks head coach, replacing Mike Bellotti after the 2008 season. His tenure began notoriously with a loss at Boise State, a game now infamous for the punching incident involving LaGarrette Blount, but things improved quickly.

He went on to become the first first-year coach in Pac-10 history to win an outright conference title. He led the Ducks to the Rose Bowl and Oregon is now 4-0 and ranked No. 4 in the nation heading into Saturday’s showdown with No. 9 Stanford in Eugene.

Kelly was signed to a five-year deal when he was hired in 2009. His new deal reportedly would require him to pay a million buyout if he were to leave after this season.

“Chip Kelly’s track record in a short amount of time speaks volumes for his character, integrity and ability to lead this program to a new set of standards,” said athletic director Rob Mullens. “It became clear before my arrival at Oregon that retaining him to head the university’s football program was a priority. This is an investment in the future success of Oregon athletics and an investment in retaining one of the brightest college coaches in the country.”
