Jets Junior Flag win British Final

Prior to watching the senior kitted team fall to the London Blitz in the National Title game for the second year running, the Coventry Jets’ Junior Flag team captured their own British Championship defeating the Blitz 32-24 at Worcester’s Sixways Stadium. The jets twin quarterback threat of Tom Clancy and AJ Mepstead gave their opponents a headache with their contrasting styles. The elusive Clancy finding time for his receivers to get open, whilst the strong armed Mepstead would hook up deep with Clancy.
Josh Keys starred as a possession receiver with two touchdown scores. Hannah Russell-Yarde and Brad Bowers made the defence look like they were chasing shadows with some dazzling runs after the catch. Defensively, rookie Tee Nguyen kept the opposition quarterbacks under pressure as she consistently forced them to roll to their unfavoured left. Stephen Pinks, left it all out on the field leading a defence that swarmed to the ball every time an opponent made a catch. MVP Clancy chipped in defensively picking off a Blitz pass and returning it for a score as the Jets secured a memorable victory.
In order to qualify for the final on the stadium’s main pitch the Jets would first have to negotiate a tie against the Coventry Cougars on one of the outside fields. In the semi final the heavily favoured Jets were held scoreless as their offence misfired. Fortunately the defence started magnificently and the score at half time was 0-0. After the break the Jets’ high powered offence finally got on track, scoring on every possession to finish the game and ease into the final with a score of 22-8.
After the game jubilant Head Coach Andrew Gambrill was full of praise for all involved. “Coaches Stamford and Clancy did a fantastic job with their play calling. The real credit though goes to the youngsters who played brilliantly and were totally unfazed by playing in front of a crowd in a stadium. This is a real landmark for the club, but already the players are talking about next year’s championship.”
The Jets will continue with their winter training this Sunday 2-4pm at the Memorial Park and intend to play in monthly tournaments until next season starts.
