Nick Collins apologized on Wednesday for his altercation with a Bears fan after Monday night’s heartbreaking loss in Chicago.

“This is a situation that I could have walked away from but, you know, heat of the moment,” Collins said. “Things happen. Both sides (were) out of line.”

Collins expressed remorse to his team, fans and the public for throwing his mouthpiece into the stands after he was provoked by a fan. Milwaukee’s WITI-TV FOX6 exclusively captured video of the altercation and reported that the fan used a racial slur and spit on Collins.

Collins’ teammates and coach are backing the veteran safety, who has been selected to consecutive Pro Bowls.

“The fans are taking it too far,” wide receiver Donald Driver said. “This is a game where we go out here and we try to have fun playing it. I think the fans are taking it too far when they start talking about you, your family. They don’t know your family.”

Head coach Mike McCarthy also noted that he supports Collins “100 percent,” while quarterback Aaron Rodgers came to his defense as well.

“I think fans sometimes forget we’re human,” Rodgers said. “And then some fans think that because they’re behind the rail, or gate, or stadium fence, that that gives them the right to do whatever they want.”
