Reforming Major College Football: Second Division Simulation

Posted By Admin on February 24, 2011

In an earlier article, I discussed a proposal for reforming major college football by breaking up the BCS system for the Football Bowl Subdivision and getting rid of the control of the NCAA. The FBS would be split into two divisions: the Premier League and the Second Division. The best six teams in the Second Division would be promoted to the Premier League while the bottom six teams in the Premier League would be relegated to the Second Division. In order to give you all a better understanding of how this system of college football would have worked if it was in place in 2010, I used NCAA Football 11 and simulated the regular season and the playoffs according to the layout of the conferences introduced in the previous article.

2010 Second Division Season Recap

Auburn won the 2010 Second Division Championship by defeating North Carolina in the finals of the playoffs. Joining Auburn and North Carolina in being promoted to the Premier League were Oklahoma, South Carolina, Michigan and Texas A&M. Stanford and SMU narrowly missed out on being promoted by having the two largest point differentials in their quarterfinal playoff losses. The race to make the playoffs was very tight and a couple of 8 win teams (Marshall and Ohio) had their bubbles burst while other 8 win squads (Wake Forest, South Carolina, Kansas State and Indiana) slipped in as the last teams in the bracket. South Carolina survived four consecutive conference losses while Marcus Lattimore was injured to finish the season on a 5 game win streak. The Gamecocks’ season ended in the national semifinal against Auburn which was enough of a run for South Carolina to make it to the Premier League for 2011. Cam Newton was named Player of the Year as he helped Auburn dominate the Second Division during the regular season and the playoffs. North Carolina defeated Florida State in the Conference 1 Championship Game 29-13. Auburn beat Oklahoma 34-20 in the Conference 2 title game. Michigan slammed surprise division winner Indiana 35-7 in the Conference 3 Championship Game. The full conference standings and playoff bracket follow the jump.
