The NFL and its players’ union met Tuesday in Washington, D.C. for another round of negotiations on the new collective bargaining agreement. At the end of the day, the sides released a ‘joint statement’ that said they talked about 18-game season, rookie wage scale and retired players and they look forward to future negotiations.
It was a bunch of bull.
According to multiple people with knowledge of the talks, nothing of substance was discussed Tuesday, no new proposals were exchanged on any of the topics mentioned in the joint statement and no progress was made toward a new deal. Commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t even attend the session. That’s happened before, and it infuriates the players because they consider Goodell’s absence a clear sign that the owners don’t want to negotiate and just want to lock them out. But whether Goodell’s there or not, the fact is nothing’s being done on this issue and nothing will be done on it as long as the two sides fail to share the same goal.
