In a game that saw 106 rushing attempts compared to just 37 passes, it’s only fitting the winner was the one who held onto the football. Air Force ran for 170 yards on 49 attempts and was outgained on the ground significantly by Georgia Tech (279 yards on 57 carries). The Yellow Jackets, however, lost three fumbles, including one inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line, and the turnover margin ended up being the difference in a 14-7 Air Force victory in the Independence Bowl. The Falcons did not turn the ball over all game.

Despite the miscues, Georgia Tech (6-7) still held a tenuous 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter, having held Air Force to two field goals and gotten an Anthony Allen touchdown of its own. A fourth-quarter touchdown by Air Force’s Jared Tew — and ensuing two-point conversion by Jonathan Warzeka — gave the Falcons the lead for good.

After a long, clock-eating drive — over nine minutes — by Air Force ended with a missed field goal, Georgia Tech did have a chance to tie the game with a last-minute drive. The Yellow Jackets needed to go 80 yards in 1:48. They almost did. John Davis of Air Force intercepted Tevin Washington’s pass on the Falcons’ one-yard line with 11 seconds remaining. It was the fourth turnover for Tech.

Washington was the leading rusher in the game, carrying the ball 28 times for 131 yards. He was the starter in the second half of the season for Tech after starter Josh Nesbitt was lost for the season with an injury.

Allen gained 91 yards and the lone Yellow Jackets’ score on 23 carries.

Air Force (9-4) had seven different players carry the ball. Tew ran for 58 yards on 18 carries. For the most part, the Air Force offense was held down by the Yellow Jackets’ defense. But the Falcons took care of the football while their defense got it back for them — four times.
